Position: Heavy Civil Construction Estimator
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina
Responsibilities:
Project Assessment: Evaluate project plans, specifications, and other relevant documents to gain a thorough understanding of the scope, materials, and resources required.
Cost Estimation: Prepare accurate and detailed cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects, including earthwork, grading, drainage, utilities, roadways, bridges, and other infrastructure components.
Quantity Takeoff: Perform quantity takeoffs to determine the amount of materials, labor, and equipment needed for each project component.
Bid Preparation: Develop comprehensive bid proposals, ensuring all costs, including labor, materials, subcontractor quotes, equipment, and overhead, are accurately accounted for.
Vendor and Subcontractor Coordination: Solicit and evaluate quotes from subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors to secure competitive pricing for materials and services.
Value Engineering: Identify cost-saving opportunities and alternative construction methods while maintaining project quality and safety standards.
Cost Analysis: Analyze historical cost data and industry benchmarks to validate estimates and adjust as necessary.
Risk Assessment: Identify potential risks and uncertainties in the project and develop contingency plans and cost provisions.
Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to refine estimates and ensure alignment with project goals and client expectations.
Bid Submissions: Prepare and submit bid packages in a timely manner, ensuring compliance with all client requirements and deadlines.
Contract Review: Assist in contract review and negotiation to ensure terms are consistent with the estimated costs and scope of work.
Post-Bid Activities: Participate in post-bid activities, such as bid reviews, client meetings, and post-bid analysis, to improve estimating accuracy and win rates.
Requirements:
Education: Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field is preferred. Relevant work experience may substitute for formal education.
Experience: 3-5 years of heavy civil construction estimating experience, with a proven track record of successful bids in a similar capacity.
Construction Knowledge: Strong understanding of heavy civil construction processes, materials, methods, and industry standards.
Software Proficiency: Proficiency in construction estimating software (e.g., ProEst, HCSS HeavyBid), as well as Microsoft Excel and project management software.
Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail in quantity takeoffs and cost calculations.
Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey complex information clearly and effectively to team members, clients, and subcontractors.
Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, and permitting processes in North Carolina.
Organization: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
Team Player: Collaborative attitude and willingness to work as part of a project team.
Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust estimates and strategies as project requirements change or new information becomes available.
Certifications: Relevant certifications such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or similar credentials are a plus but not mandatory.
Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the Raleigh, North Carolina construction market, subcontractors, and suppliers is advantageous.
